Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu was born on December 10th, 1949 (73 years old as of 2022) in Shivrampur village in the Sadar Upazila of Pabna District, which was then part of East Bengal in the Dominion of Pakistan (now Bangladesh). His astrological sign is Sagittarius.
Shahabuddin received his education at Radhanagar Majumder Academy School and College in Pabna. Career
Legal Practitioner
Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu began his career in the judicial service of Bangladesh in 1982 as an Assistant Judge. During this time, he also served as the publicity secretary for the Pabna district unit of the Awami League.
n 1995, Chuppu was elected as the general secretary of the Judicial Service Association and was later appointed as the coordinator of the Bangabandhu murder trial by the Ministry of Law after the Awami League returned to power in the 1996 elections. He served as a judge for 25 years and retired as a District and Sessions Judge in 2006.
In addition to his judicial duties, Chuppu also served as the Chairman of the Judicial Inquiry Commission, set up to investigate cases of human rights violations committed by the leaders and workers of the BNP-Jamaat alliance after the 2001 general elections. He was later appointed as the Chairman of the Labour Court and practiced as a lawyer at the Bangladesh Supreme Court from 2008 to 2011.
After his retirement, Chuppu served as the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission from March 2011 to March 2016. Throughout his judicial career, he participated in various local and international workshops, seminars, symposia, and conferences on case management and court management, and visited various countries across the world. These events were organized by the Judicial Training Academy.

Shahabuddin Chuppu joined politics at a young age at the student level. Thereafter, he kept switching in and out of politics several times. He has been associated with the Awami League from the beginning. During the 1970s, he left politics and worked as a freedom fighter for the independence of Bangladesh. He resumed politics after the country got independence in 1971. In 1982, he served as the publicity secretary for the Pabna district unit Awami League. Subsequently, he quit politics again to pursue his career as a law professional. After retiring as the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Shahabuddin Chuppu again joined politics and was appointed as a member of the advisory council of the Awami League, which comprises senior party leaders and technocrats, in 2020. He was appointed as the Chairman of the Awami League’s Publicity and Publications cell following the demise of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s former advisor HT Imam in 2022. In December 2022, Chuppu served as the Election Commissioner of Bangladesh.
President of Bangladesh
On 12 February 2023, Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu was nominated for the post of President by the ruling Awami League, which has an absolute majority in the Bangladesh Parliament (holding 305 seats in the 350-seat Parliament). Apparently, his name was proposed by Awami League’s general secretary Obaidul Quader. The party’s opposition in Parliament Jatiya Party did not file any nomination for the post. Awami League’s main opposition outside the Parliament Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) could not nominate anyone since all its seven lawmakers resigned in December 2022. Thus, Shahabuddin would be elected unopposed as the President of Bangladesh. He would resume the post on 24 April 2023.
Other Work
From 1980-82, Shahabuddin Chuppu worked as a journalist for Daily Banglar Bani, a Bangladeshi national newspaper. He has also written columns for several newspapers. As of 2023, Shahabuddin is serving as the vice chairman of the Board of Directors of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd. He represents JMC Builders Ltd. on the board. He has also worked as an advisor for NRB Global Bank Ltd. Chuppu is involved in various social, educational, and cultural organizations in Bangladesh. Chuppu has also represented Bangladesh at the International Seminar in Beijing, China, organised by the Commonwealth on Prevailing Law in Bangladesh.
Freedom Fighter
Shahabuddin Chuppu participated in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War as a freedom fighter. He played a crucial role during the war in the northern region, serving as the student leader and the convener of Sadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangam Parishad in the Pabna district.
After Bangladesh got independence on 26 March 1971, Chuppu got involved in politics. In 1974, he served as the President of the Pabna District Jubo League.
In August 1975, Chuppu was arrested by the police for staging protests (as he was against the newly formed government that took the charge after Bangabandhu) following the assassination of the founder of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a military coup along with most of his family members. He was sentenced to jail for three years in the matter. Soon after his release from prison, Shahabuddin Chuppu moved to India to meet his colleagues.
