Famous Nigerian actress, Genevieve Nnaji, has been elected to join The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; the organization responsible for the annual Oscars in the handling of awards for artistic and technical merit in the movie industry in the United States.
Genevieve Nnaji starred and directed in ‘Lionheart’, a movie which was Nigeria’s first-ever Oscar submission for best international feature film in 2019.
Unfortunately, the film, about a woman managing her father’s feeble bus company, was disqualified because it was largely in English. The Oscars were expecting a Nigerian native tongue dominated movie.
At the time Genevieve Nnaji responded saying.” Nigeria ‘did not choose who colonised’ the country”.
Nevertheless, the conversation in the 95-minute of the movie was in English except for an 11-minute section in the Igbo language.
She took to retweet the announcement of her membership by the Academy on her twitter page.

Upon her appointment, the Nollywood superstar will be authorized to vote for Oscar winners.
As a new member she now has an automatic right to vote for the Oscar winners for 10 years, reports Hollywood Reporter.
Nigerians and many other Africans are very proud of her upon her appointment by the Oscars Academy.
