Lagos in the early 1980s and ’90s was the economic and commercial hub of Africa.
One of the most vibrant cities on the continent, it was likened to the great New York, Paris, and Milan.
The National Theatre
Unique for its designs and color, the National Theatre in Lagos is the most visible landmark when you have to connect the mainland to the island. Constructed in 1976 by a former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, it was later completed by his successor, General Olusegun Obasanjo. It is home to ancient art and modern works by some of the country’s most outstanding artists. The theatre is located at Iganmu Road, Lagos, Nigeria.
Third Mainland Bridge
Built-in the late 1990s and launched by then president, Ibrahim Babangida, the third mainland bridge was once upon a time the longest bridge in Africa until the 6th October Bridge was completed in Cairo. Its importance cannot be underestimated as it connects the mainland of Lagos to the Island. It measures about 11.8 km in length.
The New Afrika Shrine
If you want to enjoy a perfect time in Lagos, then the New Afrika Shrine should be your home. Home to the famous, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, it is an open-air entertainment center that still houses the spirit of the legend. With several quotes of Fela posted on the walls, the shrine which was used to host concerts targeted at the military government was burnt down in 1977. It was, however, rebuilt and reopened in 2000. It is currently managed by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s son, Femi Kuti and daughter Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti.
Lekki Conservation Centre
This centre offers one of the best escape from the usual hustle and bustle of the city. The 78-hectare facility located on the Island was established in Lagos. It has a 401m Canopy walkway, 96-Seater Gazebos, Barbecue joints, Beach Volleyball courts and Spectators’ pavilion, Gym facilities Koi, Tilapia ponds, Nature Station Rotunda, Swamp Lookout Station, and Tree House.
Tarkwa Bay Beach
For those who enjoy natural air, then the Bay beach is the right place for you. Accessible only by water, the beach is a popular destination for swimmers and folks who love water sports. It is also serene and devoid of noise unlike other beaches on the Island.
