Over 70% of prison inmates in Nigeria have been awaiting trials for years. Some inmates can’t afford a lawyer, while some can’t find their case files to make court appearances, and while some have no lawyers, those with lawyers keep getting their cases adjoined by the judiciary.
The capacity of the prisons are stretched beyond boundaries leaving inmates to sleep like packed Saden fishes in a can. Today we have between 3000 to 4000 prison inmates inside a facility originally built to house 800 inmates which is so appalling.
