The Bafana Bafana of South Africa beat Nigeria for the first time in a competitive game when they defeated the Super Eagles 2-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday and coach Stuart Baxter has revealed how he managed to beat the Nigerian side.
The South Africans began their 2019 AFCON qualifying series on a fantastic note after they beat Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium and speaking after the game, Baxter explained the tactics he deployed.
“When they went for the first 15-20 minutes without scoring, we played a little bit deeper but after the 20 minutes we tried to open the field but they pressed quite well,” he said.
“So we couldn’t open the field the way we wanted to and we spoke about it at half time and I thought we opened the field up much better and the wide players they could get in behind and opened the backline.”
Second half goals by Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau meant the Bafana Bafana earned a first ever win in a competitive match against Nigeria.
