The departure of James Rodriguez not only freed up space in the Real Madrid squad, it vacated an iconic number. Before the dust settled on his exit, fans were wondering who would inherit James’s number 10 shirt.
Today it’s been revealed that Madrid have given the shirt to Luka Modric, their previous number 19.
If this is a move that’s supposed to honour Modric’s standing in the team then it’s well deserved. The Croatian midfielder has become a legend for Madrid since joining the club from Tottenham in 2012.
Real Madrid legend
It’s crazy to think that four years ago he was deemed the worst signing of the season by many. They didn’t appreciate his qualities then and that harsh atmosphere took some time to acclimatise to.
Now fans appreciate his silky touches, his delicate control, his superb reading of the game. Modric is one of the best midfielders in the world and worthy of wearing the number 10 shirt. Madrid just hope he fares better than his predecessors. Previous wearers of the shirt include Robinho and Mesut Ozil as well as James.
