The Enugu State Police Command said the explosion at a market in Enugu was caused by a battery spark. LIB reported that the explosion occurred at the scrap site of the former New Artisan Market along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Road on Monday, September 11, at about 8pm.
The incident is alleged to have caused minor destruction in a nearby food shop including two vehicles parked near the said shop. The command immediately dispatched its Explosive Ordinance Department ( EOD ) to the scene to ensure that the area was safe and secure for all.
The Spokesman of the command, SP Ebere Amaraizu, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, in Enugu said that a heavy- duty battery negative and positive in the scrap had contact with metal scrap leading to the explosion.
“The preliminary investigations have revealed that there was a fire contact with the battery at the scrap site of the former market,’’ he said, adding that investigations were still ongoing to unravel the incident to forestall future occurrence.
