Trayvon Martin’s family lawyer has responded to George Zimmerman after the former neighbourhood watchman, who murdered Trayvon in 2012, sued the parents of his late victim.
George Zimmerman filed the lawsuit on Wednesday, December 4. He is seeking $100million from Trayvon’s family and Florida state prosecutors due to claims of defamation and fake witnesses at his 2013 murder trial.
The lawsuit by Zimmerman and his legal team is based on Trayvon’s cell phone records. They claim it proves that Rachel Jeantel, who testified against Zimmerman, was not Trayvon’s girlfriend, was not on the phone with Trayvon before he was killed, and that she repeatedly lied to cause Zimmerman’s arrest and attempt to send him to prison.
The press release for the lawsuit states:
“The research also allegedly reveals that Trayvon’s real girlfriend and legitimate phone witness was in fact Miami resident Brittany Diamond Eugene, who was switched out for Jeantel when Eugene refused to bear false witness against Zimmerman.”
Trayvon’s family attorney Benjamin Crump has now fired back in a public statement.
The statement reads:
I have every confidence that this unfounded and reckless lawsuit will be revealed for what it is — another failed attempt to defend the indefensible and a shameless attempt to profit off the lives and grief of others. This plaintiff continues to display a callous disregard for everyone but himself, revictimizing individuals whose lives were shattered by his own misguided actions. He would have us believe that he is the innocent victim of a deep conspiracy, despite the complete lack of any credible evidence to support his outlandish claims. This tale defies all logic, and it’s time to close the door on these baseless imaginings.
