Most of us are guilty of stalking our ex-partner on social media.
Sometimes it happens out of mere curiosity and is a harmless deed but if it becomes a habit and starts taking a toll on your daily mood, take this as a sign to stop doing it.
Next time you feel tempted to know what is happening in your ex-lover’s life or go through his/her social media accounts to revisit those sweet memories from the past, here’s how you can try putting an end to this habit.
1. Unfollow!
The first thing you need to do is unfollow or unfriend your ex from all the social media platforms. It is obvious that the thought of your past relationship would always cross your mind if the photographs, posts or status updates of your ex-lover keeps popping up on your feed.
2. Talk to your mutual friends
Sometimes, your mutual friends add fuel to your temptation to stalk your ex. It’s important that you clearly tell them not to update you with what is happening in his or her life, as it is no longer your business. Tell them you are still trying to move on and knowing what is happening in your ex-partner’s life won’t you help you anyhow.
3. Find someone else to stalk
Instead of stalking your ex and ruining your mood, try stalking someone who is more interesting. Maybe a celebrity you have been crushing on, a blogger who posts informative content in your area of interest or someone who makes you curious. It will definitely help to distract you and not mess up with your peace of mind.
4. Step into the dating game
Well, stepping back into the dating game after a break-up can be intimidating but embracing this change can do wonders to your life. Going on dates would help you to meet new people, understand their experiences and make you realise one bad experience does not sum up everything life has to offer. Plus, you never know, you might find someone special who will reinstate your faith in love.
5. Remember why you broke up
Whenever you are about to open your partner’s profile on any social media platform, spare a few moments, take a deep breath and think about the reasons that made you part ways with your lover. Do you think stalking him/her would improve the situation or help you make peace with the past? Would it help you to deal with your emotions better or take a step forward in life? If your answer to any of these questions is a ‘no’, stalking is definitely not a wise thing to do.
6. Pick a new habit
Try picking a new habit that helps to distract you whenever you feel like putting on your stalker hat. It could be painting, pottery, reading a book, writing your journal, online shopping or calling your best friend. Look for something that works for you, strengthen your will power and you will eventually get over this habit.
7. What about social media detox?
If nothing helps, try doing a social media detox and enjoy spending some time in your own company, dealing with your emotions and living an offline life. Get back to social media when you are sure you can use it responsibly and most importantly, without stalking the wrong people.
